Diagnosis: dorsal finrays XII + 16-17; anal finrays II + 18; pectoral finrays 13; pelvic finrays I + 3. Highly developed lateral line system with many pores on head. Colour: basic coloration mostly olive-greyish (dependent on colour of substrate), 5-6 vertical bars from bases of dorsal fin onto side of body. Spawning males dark brownish. Size: to 13 cm.
Habitat: surf zone of rocky littoral area, preferring crevices and troughs in steep walls. Behaviour: night active, also during the day in the spawning season. Food: mussels and other benthic invertebrates; also algae. Reproduction: February-May.
Distribution: Mediterranean, Sea of Marmara and from mouth of Gironde southwards to Senegal. Elsewhere, off Madeira, the Canaries and Concarneau (Brittany).
