Diagnosis: dorsal finrays XII + 24-25; anal finrays II + 25-26; pectoral finrays 14; pelvic finrays I + 3. Colour: basic coloration yellow-greenish; dark vertical bars with light blue margins. Spawning males bluish, upper parts of bars dark red, high crest and bulb glands at end of anal spines. Size: to 18 cm.

Habitat: between sea-grass, sometimes on rocky bottoms at 2-15 m. Reproduction: eggs from several females guarded by male; specimens first female then change to male.

Distribution: western Mediterranean, Adriatic Sea and Izmir.
