Diagnosis: dorsal finrays XI + 14-15; anal finrays II + 16; pectoral finrays 12; pelvic finrays I + 3. Anterior part of dorsal fin conspicuously higher than posterior part. Colour: basic coloration brown or greyish, 5-7 dark bars on body; between dorsal finrays 6-7 a black or blue spot with white margin. Size: to 20 cm.
Habitat: from 10 m (Atlantic) or 30 m (Mediterranean) to 100 m, on hard bottoms. Behaviour: night active. Food: small invertebrates. Reproduction: April (Marseilles) or July (England); eggs are laid under mussel-shells or stones and guarded by male.
Distribution: Mediterranean, Black Sea and Atlantic coast from Morocco to English Channel.
