Diagnosis (females): Illicium 75% SL; posterior escal appendage absent; details of escal morphology unknown, specimen lost.

Distribution: single specimen off southern Portugal, lost in fire of the Museo Bocage, Lissabon, 1978.

Eggs, larvae and young stages. No data.
Otoliths (sagitta). No data.

Note. The only known specimen of H. compressus is lost and the details of its escal morphology are unknown; however, the unique combination of a long illicium (75% SL) and the lack of a posterior escal appendage justifies retention of the species until additional data are available.
