Diagnosis: bait ranging from a simple, unpigmented sphere of irregularly folded tissue to an elongate, tapering appendage with a variable number of slender filaments and a cluster of darkly pigmented, spherical swellings at base. Second dorsal spine free, not attached to head by membrane. Dorsal finrays III + 12 (rarely 13), usually only 3 posteriormost soft finrays bifurcate; anal finrays 7 (rarely 8), all bifurcate; pectoral finrays 10 or 11 (rarely 12), all simple. Colour: a small, darkly pigmented, basidorsal ocellus. Size: to 90 mm SL.
Habitat: benthic, between 44 and 293 m. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.
Distribution: the Azores and Madeira. Elsewhere, off the Canaries, St Helena, and throughout Indo-Pacific to Hawaiian and Society Is.
