Diagnosis: body depressed, depth 5.2-6.4 (m = 5.7) times in SL; slightly spatulate snout. Membrane of dorsal and anal fins not connected to caudal fin. A very small dermal flap on posterior margin of anterior nostril. Flattened papillae in 3-5 rows across disc region A; 7-9 rows across disc region B. Dorsal finrays 13-16 (m = 15); anal finrays 9-11; pectoral finrays 26-29 (m = 28); caudal finrays 10-13 (m = 12). Length of disc 3.8-4.3 (m = 4.0) times in SL. Colour: males generally reddish on back, with intense red spots on head; females yellow-green. Size: to 75 mm SL.

Distribution: Black Sea and Mediterranean and from the Canaries to British Isles.
