Diagnosis: second dorsal finrays 61-68; anal finrays 68-73; pectoral finrays 23-27. Light organ located between bases of pelvic fins. Oblique scale rows between lateral line and dorsal fin 12-15. Colour: oral cavity pale. Size: to 30 cm SL.

Habitat: benthopelagic on the continental slope. Food: no data. Reproduction: eggs and larvae pelagic. Spawning in the Mediterranean in the spring.

Distribution: in the area from Nice to Palermo in the Mediterranean and also at Madeira and the Great Meteor Bank. Farther south caught off Mauritania. Records from still farther south may be of other species.
