Diagnosis: chin barbel present. Vomerine teeth present, palatine teeth present. Anal fin appearing as 2. Size: to about 60 cm SL.
Habitat: benthopelagic at depths ranging from less than 500 m to about 2,500 m; trawled and caught on longline. Locally abundant. Food: a generalized feeder, mainly on fishes, crustaceans and squids, but also eating food of terrestrial origin, including garbage. Reproduction: eggs and larvae pelagic. Probably a winter and early spring spawner in the Mediterranean.
Distribution: in the eastern North Atlantic and Mediterranean from the south of Iceland to the Faroes, west of the British Isles to the Bay of Biscay, the western Mediterranean, to Cape Bojador on the West African coast, also at Madeira, the Azores, and the Canaries.
