Diagnosis: D1 7-12; D2 37-43; A 36-40. Gillrakers total 12-20, 10- 14 on lower limb. Vertebrae 52-56. Colour: mostly almost black above, lighter below, inside of mouth and branchial cavity black. Size: to 87 cm SL (max.), less than preceding species.
Habitat: nearly same as preceding species but at less depth, mature fishes at more than 100 m, young fishes more inshore; behaviour nearly the same as in M. merluccius. Food: mainly fishes, crustaceans. Reproduction: Iater than M. merluccius, off Morocco mainly from August to September, sometimes up to December, in south earlier, mainly at 80 to 120 m.
Distribution: eastern Atlantic off Morocco. Elsewhere, southwards to Guinea.
Eggs, larvae and young stages. No data.
