Diagnosis: head fairly large, about 20% SL; snout a little acute, 28-30% head length; eye small, 17.8-26.7% head length; interorbital space, 16.7-20% head length; chin barbel present, at least twice eye diameter. Pyloric caeca 26-27. First finray of pectoral and first two finrays of pelvic fins elongated as filaments, as also (usually) second finray of first dorsal fin; first dorsal fin with 11-13 finrays; pectoral fin with 22-25 finrays, its insertion slightly in advance of pelvic fin base; pelvic fins with 8 finrays, their insertion below first dorsal fin origin. Scales without spinules. Lateral line strongly arched over pectoral fin. No light organ. Colour: generally hrownish, fin membranes, mouth and gill chamber blackish. Size: to at least 60 cm TL.
Habitat: benthopelagic at 600-1,370 m. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.
Distribution: Atlantic off Morocco. Elsewhere, southward to the Canaries, also western Atlantic (Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean, off Surinam and Cayenne).
