Diagnosis: a three-bearded rockling with a moderately large head (up to 25% SL); snout pointed, rounded in dorsal view; eye diameter less than inter-orbital. Barbels well developed, the nasal pair always longer than orbit diameter. Second dorsal finrays 52-62; pectoral finrays 22-24; anal finrays 43-49. Vertebrae 17-18 + 32-35. Colour: in life, uniform reddish-brown to light brick red; pink ventrally. Size: to 30 cm SL.
Habitat: offshore in deep water at 150-1,400 m, always on soft bottoms; to the north of its range, in temperatures close to or below 0° C. Food: mostly decapod, amphipod and euphausiid crustaceans, occasionally fishes. Reproduction: no data; pelagic young have been caught in June-August near the Arctic Circle.
Distribution: off south-eastern coasts of Greenland, all but southern coast of Iceland, the Faroe-Shetland ridge to Norwegian coasts north from Bergen.
