Accepted name: Eleginus nawaga (Koelreuter, 1770) (updated 2009-06-25)

Diagnosis: first dorsal finrays 12-16, second dorsal finrays 14-21, third dorsal finrays 20-22; first anal finrays 19-23, second anal finrays 19-26. Vertebrae 57-60. Gillrakers 24-28. Only one pair of parapophyses on fifth vertebra, short and not swollen. Colour: grey, with brownish or dark spots on back, belly silvery white. Size: to 42 cm SL, usually 15-23 cm.

Habitat: inshore, especially in bays, bottom with soft muddy ground, at r shallow depths, salt and brackish waters, entering mouths of rivers, in winter under ice. Behaviour: gregarious, in shoals. Food: amphipods, mysids, small fish. Reproduction: January, during about 15 days, under ice at 8-15 m depth, over sandy and stony ground, eggs demersal.

Distribution: White Sea, rarer in south- eastern Barents and southwestern Kara Seas.
