Diagnosis: dorsal finrays 93-103; anal finrays 62-75. Vertebrae 64-67. Colour: variable, brownish-grey, paler on belly, dorsal and anal fins with black band near margin edged with white. Size: to 40 cm SL, exceptionally over 100 cm.
Habitat: offshore, benthic, at 100-1,000 m, usually 100-400 m, on hard, rocky ground. Behaviour: sluggish, solitary or in small shoals. Food: molluscs, crustaceans. Reproduction: from May to July, in shallower waters, between 40-400 m, usually from 100 to 200 m.
Distribution: eastern North Atlantic from British Isles to western Barents Sea, Iceland, Skagerrak, Kattegat, also western North Atlantic.
