Diagnosis: D 9-10; A 10-11. Scales in longitudinal series 25-28. Colour: male greenish-brown with blue spots on sides and 2-3 dark bands on caudal fin; female with dark vertical lines on sides. Size: to 8 cm (females) or 6 cm (males).
Habitat: marine shores; also in freshwater, even thermal. Food: see family. Reproduction: see family.
Distribution: Egypt and Israel; reported from a sulphur-producing lake in Cyrenaica, Libya (J. L. B. Smith, 1952). Elsewhere, some landlocked populations around the Dead Sea (subsp. richardsoni Boulenger); coasts of the Red Sea and near Indian Ocean.
