Diagnosis: barbel with one or two filaments at base of stem; other filaments usually present on stem and at base of terminal bulb; short tubercles or bulbed filaments usually present at tip of bulb. Photophores in ventral row between pectoral and pelvic fin insertions (PV) about 39-44; in lateral row to before pelvic insertion (OV) 39-42. Colour: head and
body black. Size: tomore than 37 cm.
Habitat, etc.: see family.
Distribution: northward to about 50° N. Elsewhere, southward to about 7° N; also across the North Atlantic between about 25° and 40° N; Gulf of Mexico; and the South Atlantic from about 10° to 40° S; Indian and Pacific Oceans.
