Diagnosis: pectoral fins and chin barbel present. Serial photophores conspicuous, mostly in widely spaced groups, those of ventral row between pectoral and pelvic fin insertions (PV) 15 in 5 groups; in lateral row to before pelvic fin insertion (OV) 16 in 5 groups. Colour: head and body black; pale luminous spots on head forming broken lines from nostrils to post-orbital organ and from above post-orbital organ to rear of head. Size: to more than 15 cm.

Distribution: one record from 31° N, 26° W. Elsewhere, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, western Atlantic between about 35° and 6° N; one South Atlantic record from 34° S, 49° W; Indian and Pacific Oceans.

Otoliths (sagitta). No data.
