Diagnosis: body elongate; mouth large, premaxillary teeth uneven with at least one tooth, usually the fourth, greatly enlarged; vomer with teeth. Pseudobranch absent. Meristic data (eastern North Atlantic only): gillrakers on first arch 23-24 (22-25), 4-5 on hypobranchial; no raker in articulation of epi- and ceratobranchial; branchiostegal rays 14 (15), (5) 6 on epihyal. Dorsal finrays 12-14; pectoral finrays 9-11; pelvic finrays 6; anal finrays 17-18; dorsal and anal fin origins about opposite; last dorsal and anal finrays not split to base; adipose fin absent; anus closer to pelvic bases than to anal fin origin. Vertebrae 31(32-33). Pyloric caecae 4. Scales present. Photophores: SO absent, ORB 1, OP 2, BR 10 11, IV 3 + 10; VAV 5, 2 (3) anterior to genital opening; AC 14-15, 2-3 between last anal and first procurrent ray; OA 8; supra-caudal gland weakly but distinctly developed, reticulum extending less distinctly anteriorly, along either side of dorsal base, to dorsal origin; infra-caudal gland similar but confined to procurrent ray. Colour: light to dark brown, with transparent area anterior to anal origin; gular area white; dorsal and anal finrays pigmented; meningeal pigment extends forwards to at least level of posterior margin of eye, often anterior to pineal body; internasal area pigmented. Size: male to 48 mm; female to 70 mm SL.

Habitat: oceanic, deep mesopelagic, precise depth range dependent upon developmental stage, latitude; juveniles and adults centred at 400-1,000 m, sometimes occurring deeper; no diel vertical migrations. Food: no data. Reproduction: dioecious.

Distribution: circumglobal, subtropical- tropical, occurring in small numbers throughout Clofnam area to about 61° N; absent in Mediterranean
