Diagnosis: body fairly slender, head relatively small, snout not prominent, tip of lower jaw slightly upturned and fitting into groove of upper jaw, the latter fairly long and reaching back to level of pupil; mouth almost toothless. Gillrakers (33) 36-45 (50). Pre-dorsal distance less than distance from dorsal origin to base of last anal finray; dorsal finrays iii-iv 8-12, anal finrays ii-iv 9-14. Scales moderate, 61-85 in lateral line. Vertebrae 53-60 (in C. sardinella marisalbi). Colour: back brown to olive green, flanks silvery. Size: to 41.4 cm and 550 g, usually 20-35 cm.

Habitat: pelagic in brackish waters (salinity about 28 promille) of coastal regions, bays and mouths of rivers and lakes, also anadromous and freshwater populations. Food: no exact data, but nominate subspecies feeds on planktonic crustaceans and does not feed during spawning run. Reproduction: entering rivers in shoals in autumn; spawning in September at 3-5 years (in nominate subspecies) and returning downstream afterwards; young descend in autumn of following year.

Distribution: White Sea and south-eastern Barents Sea (as C. sardinella marisalbi). Elsewhere, coastal waters, rivers and lakes of Siberia and North America (nominate subspecies).
