Diagnosis: snout more than one-half of orbit. Gill opening extends more than halfway up side of body. Anal fin base equal to or shorter than caudal peduncle length. Size: 16 cm or more.
Habitat: mesopelagic. Usually caught in small aggregations, at 600-900 m in the daytime and 25-500 m at night. Food: plankton. Reproduction: pelagic eggs and larvae.
Distribution: generally tropical Atlantic, rather rare in the southern part of the area.
