Diagnosis: eye large, two or less in head. Gill opening restricted, extending less than halfway up side of body; anal fin base longer than caudal peduncle. Scale rows along side about 40, between dorsal base and ventral base 4-5; scale pockets with black pigment. Size: to about 20 cm. May include two species.
Habitat: meso- to bathypelagic. Sometimes taken in large aggregations. Food: plankton. Reproduction: pelagic eggs and larvae.
Distribution: common in the boreal North Atlantic, less abundant to the south. Perhaps antitropical, perhaps in other oceans.
