Diagnosis: body slender, elongate, head much less than a third of body length. Snout short, less than eye; premaxillary tusks inconspicuous or absent. Gillrakers 27-32 (8-10 on upper limb). Branchiostegal rays 7-8. Pyloric caeca 9-11, with 13-20 terminal lobes. No pit behind upper part of shoulder girdle. Dorsal fin far back on body, with 15-19 finrays; pectoral fins small, with 15-18 finrays; pelvic fins behind midpoint of body, with 9-10 finrays; anal fin origin well behind that of dorsal fin, with 14-17 finrays. Light organs present; organ on underside of caudal peduncle (ICO) single; organs between pectoral fin bases (JO), midline behind pectoral tips (THO) and just before pelvic fin bases (MVO) forming transverse bands; small organ in upper part of eye (dorsal OO) and on upperpart of gill cover (OPO) present in juveniles. Lateral line with about 44-51 enlarged modified scales, 100-120 scales in lateral series above it, 10-12 above lateral line and 12-14 below it at level of dorsal and anal fin origins; no scales on gill covers; scales on nape of head reversed, overlapping forward. Colour: uniform dark. Size: to 27.5 cm, usually 14-20 cm.
Habitat: deep benthopelagic, from 365 to 850 m in northern part of its range, becoming bathypelagic in southern subtropical part. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.
Distribution: off Portugal, Bay of Biscay, northward to Iceland and eastern Greenland. Elsewhere, southward to level of Senegal (12°N, 23° W), also 10° S, 10° E and 23° 18' S, 12° 42' E.
