Diagnosis: body very elongate, eel-like. Snout blunt, eye larger than snout, about one-third of head; upper jaw short, just reaching front border of eye; mouth inferior. Dorsal fin long, with 56-67 finrays, joined to caudal fin; anal fin beginning just behind pelvic fins, much in front of dorsal fin origin, with 76-85 finrays, joined to caudal fin. Vertebrae (pre-ural) 77-84. No scales on body. Colour: blackish. Size: to 24 cm.
Habitat: engybenthic, usually at 500-2,000 m. Food: no data. Reproduction: no data.
Distribution: off Morocco and in southern part of Bay of Biscay. Elsewhere, southward to 20° S; also, western Atlantic (Gulf of Mexico,
Caribbean and off Brazil).
Eggs, larvae and young stages. No data.
