Diagnosis: body moderately elongate and compressed. Snout blunt, 62-83% of eye diameter; upper jaw reaching almost to hind margin of eye; gillrakers 29-36 (8-12 on upper limb); branchiostegal rays 7-8. Dorsal fin origin well in advance of anal fin origin; pelvic finrays usually 8. Scales above lateral line noticeably smaller than lateral line scales; no scales on cheek or gill cover. Colour: brownish. Size: to at least 30 cm.

Habitat: engybenthic to bathypelagic at about 1,100-2,700 m, usually below 1,900 m. Food: no data. Reproduction: ovarian eggs large (up to 3.5 mm in diameter).

Distribution: off coast of Morocco, also Madeira and the Azores, northward to off south-western Ireland, also Bay of Biscay. Elsewhere, southward to 22° S, also western Atlantic, South China Sea, eastern South Pacific.

Eggs larvae and young stages. No data.
