Diagnosis: head length 25-32% SL; anal base about 50% SL. Dorsal finrays 11-13; anal + caudal finrays 80-91; pelvic fin with 3 free rays plus 6-9. 2 pelvic plates, without foramina. Lateral line scales tubular. Colour: dark brown to black. Size: to 105 cm.

Habitat: benthic from 214-800 m. Food: fish (Costa and Reiner, 1977). Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: in the area, one specimen off Portugal (Costa and Reiner, 1977). Elsewhere, along the west coast of Africa from Spanish Sahara, 23° N (Maurin et al., 1978), to Cape of Good Hope, South Africa, 33° S (Barnard, 1948, Smith, 1986); also recorded from the eastern Pacific (Bussing and Lopez, 1977).
