Diagnosis: dorsal finrays 13-14; anal finrays 13-15; pectoral finrays 15-17 (1 unbranched). Gillrakers 24-29 on first branch. Predorsal scales 18-22; scales between dorsal fin origin and lateral line usually 7. Colour: iridescent blue above, silvery below; fins greyish to transparent. Size: to 20 cm.

Habitat: epipelagic in oceanic waters. Food: no data. Reproduction: eggs pelagic, without filaments; juveniles without barbels.

Distribution: south of the Azores and Madeira, but individual stragglers known from off Portugal and in Mediterranean. Elsewhere, in tropical and subtropical Atlantic and south subtropical Pacific Oceans.
