Diagnosis: scales rather large. Lateral line reduced to a row of small, round pits, one on each scale. Dorsal finrays IV-VII, I-II + 9-10; anal finrays 1-11 + 12-17. Scales in longitudinal series 40. Size: to 14 cm, usually 10 12 cm.

Habital: littoral. Behaviour: small schools in shallow water (Israel). Stenohaline. Food: zooplankton, small bottom-living invertebrates (eastern Mediterranean). Reproduction: in summer (Israel).

Distribution: eastern Mediterranean, immigrant from Indian Ocean through Suez Canal.

Eggs, larvae and young stages. No data.
