Genus Nerophis

Nerophis Rafinesque, 1810

Superior trunk and tail ridges continuous, inferior trunk and tail ridges discontinuous, lateral trunk ridge confluent with inferior tail ridge; ridges somewhat spiny in planktonic juveniles, inconspicuous in sub-adults and adults. Dorsal fin extends above 2-5 trunk rings; membranous pectoral fin present in juveniles (to about 120 mm), the fin absent in sub-adults and adults; anal fin absent, caudal fin absent. Brood area of male located under trunk, without pouch plates or membranous folds, the eggs unprotected.
