Genus Hippocampus

Hippocampus Rafinesque, 1810

Superior trunk and tail ridges discontinuous near rear of dorsal fin, inferior trunk and tail ridges discontinuous, lateral trunk ridge confluent with inferior tail ridge. Snout (and head) directed ventrally at a distinct angle to longitudinal body axis; dorsal-fin base elevated, pectoral and anal fins present, caudal fin absent. Male with sac-like brood pouch, opening through an anteriomesial slit or pore, located under tail.
