Preorbital bone with 2 spinous points over maxillae; sub-orbital ridge with 3 or 4 spinous points; supplemental preopercular spine present; upper post-temporal spine absent or reduced; all other spines present. Occipital pit absent. Teeth on palatines. Dorsal fin with 12 spines and 9-10 rays; anal fin with 3 spines and 5 rays. Scales on body ctenoid; cheek, post-orbital area and occiput scaly. Tropical and warm seas of all the oceans.
