Helicolenus Goode and Bean, 1896

Preorbital bone with rounded lobes over maxilla; first sub-orbital bone without spines, second with 1 or 2 spines; nasal spine present; preocular, supraocular and post-ocular spines low; parietal spine longer than nuchal spine; coronal, cleithral and supplemental preopercular spines absent; second preopercular spine longest. No occipital pit. Palatine teeth present. Dorsal spines usually 12 (11-13), 10-14 dorsal rays; anal fin with 3 spines and 5 rays. Chest, pectoral fin base, cheek, maxillary and occiput scaled.
Tropical, temperate and cold waters of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans; unknown from northern Indian Ocean.
