Genus Psychrolutes

Psychrolutes Gunther, 1861

Body relatively limp. Dorsal rim of orbit and entire inter-orbital area soft; bony protuberances on head absent or not conspicuous; vomer toothless; post-orbital bones 2; cirri present or absent. Spiny and softrayed dorsal fins continuous, anterior portion usually enveloped in skin; total dorsal finrays usually 23-27; anal finrays 12-14; vertebrae usually 31-34.
Benthic from shallow water to about 2,800 m, in Pacific and off Iceland and western and southern Africa.

Species about 8; in Clofnam area 1.

Recent revision: Nelson (1982). Further work is needed; Psychrolutes subspinosus is provisionally assigned to this genus.
