Genus Rhodichthys

Two pairs of nostrils (nostrils double). Ventral sucking disc absent. Pectoral fin distinctly divided into 2 lobes, the gap bridged by rudimentary rays. Lower lobe of pectoral fin developed into a single, long filament, bifid or trifid distally. Pseudobranch absent.

Habitat: benthopelagic or pelagic below 1,500 m, over soft mud bottoms in areas where bottom temperature is below O °C and salinities are about 35ä.
Food: bathypelagic and planktonic crustaceans. Reproduction: spawning may occur only once a year, and be protracted. Nearly ripe females have been captured in early summer, ripe females in December, and fry in August. May have 70 or more ripe eggs of up to 7 mm diameter.

Distribution: common in the Norwegian Sea; known also from the Faroe Trough and from Baffin Bay. In Clofnam area, apparently restricted to north of the Wyville Thomson Ridge and the Iceland-Faroe Rise.
