Careproctus Krøyer, 1862

One pair of nostrils (nostrils single). Ventral sucking disc present, small to large. Pectoral fins with or without developed lower lobe, notch variable. Pseudobranch absent.
Benthic or benthopelagic, from 15 to about 7,000 m. Food generally unknown; where known, benthic and pelagic invertebrates, possibly small fishes. Reproduction generally unknown.
