Body moderately elongate, strongly compressed; head large, about three times in body; mouth deep, tip of upper jaw distinctly behind eye; teeth on jaws, palatines and pharyngeals; gillrakers short, tooth-like; pseudobranch present; finrays soft, dorsal adipose fin present; swimbladder absent. Epi- (young) to bathypelagic (adults) in tropical to temperate oceans.
