Genus Notoscopelus

Notoscopelus Gunther, 1864

Mouth large, jaws extending more than one eye diameter behind posterior margin of orbit. Dn well developed, Vn small. PV02 above upper end of base of pectoral fin. Five PO, with 1 + 3 + 1 grouping and with PO5 elevated. Five VO, with VO5 sometimes raised. AO series divided into AOa and AOp, the last AOa sometimes raised or elevated. Two (sometimes three) Pol, horizontally arranged at lateral line. 2 + 1 Prc. Numerous patches of luminous tissue on trunk and at bases of procurrent caudal rays. Males only with supra-caudal luminous glands or with patches of luminous tissue on cheek and above eye.
High-oceanic, mesopelagic in tropical, subtropical, temperate and polar waters of Atlantic. One species (N. japonicus) restricted to western North Pacific.

Two subgenera: Notoscopelus Gunther, 1864 with 5 species; 4 in area. Pareiophus Nafpaktitis, 1975 with I species; I in area.
