Genus Gonichthys

Gonichthys Gistel, 1850

Snout conical and more or less protruding. Mouth moderately large, sub-terminal. Jaws extending about one eye diameter behind posterior margin of orbit. Caudal peduncle markedly slender, its least depth 3 1/2 times or more in its length. Gillrakers well developed. Lateral line well developed, but varying in length. Dn and Vn present. PLO at about level of upper base of pectoral fin. Five PO, level. Four VO, level. SAO angulate. AO divided into AOa and AOp. One Pol. Two Prc, horizontal. Males with a series of scale-like luminous structures bordered by black pigment supra-caudally; females with non-overlapping luminous patches infra-caudally.
High-oceanic, mesopelagic in tropical and subtropical waters of all three oceans; one species (G. barnesi) in Convergence region.
