Genus Melanostigma

Melanostigma Gunther, 1881

Body fairly elongate, covered by naked loose skin surrounded by gelatinous tissue. Pores on head small; mouth terminal, oblique; gill opening reduced, pore-like, above pectoral fin base. Pectoral fin with less than 10 finrays and only 3 radialia; pelvic fins absent. Vertebrae elongated, symmetrical, 82-99. Midwater fishes above continental slope, but eggs demersal and few.
