Mycteroperca (Gill, 1862)
Very similar to Ephinephelus from which it differs by some features in the skull. Preopercle with a more or less pronounced notch and often a definite lobe at angle. Anal finrays 11-14. Caudal fin truncate or emargmate in adults.
Benthic on the shelf in tropical Atlantic and also Mediterranean. Solitary. Feeding mostly on fishes. Protogyny observed. Flesh good but may cause ciguatera.
