Body oval, laterally flattened. Single dorsal and anal fins, divided into a spiny and a soft portion. Mouth rather small, not protractile. Teeth on each jaw fused into a sharp-edged plate. Lower and upper pharyngeal bones dentigerous. Cycloid scales. Lateral line complete or divided into two parts. Brilliantly coloured fishes.
In tropical and subtropical shallow waters, chiefly in rocky areas.
