Benthocometes Goode and Bean, 1896
Diagnosis: body rather short and stubby; depth at anus 4-5 times in SL. Large eye, equal or greater than snout. Operculum with 2 posteriorly directed spines. Median basibranchial tooth patch single. Dorsal finrays 95-110; anal finrays 79-98; pectoral finrays 27-30; pelvic finrays 2. Lateral line distinct. Colour: pale grey, branchial cavity and peritoneum black. Size: to 140 mm SL.
Habitat: on or near the bottom at 100-500 m. Food: no data. Reproduction: oviparous.
Distribution: Mediterranean (relatively few specimens known). Elsewhere, off north- western Africa (Cape Bojador) and from the tropicalwestern Atlantic.
