Genus Upeneus

Upeneus Cuvier, 1829

No spine on opercular margin; no canine-like teeth but villiform teeth on both jaws, vomer and palatines. Stripes on both dorsal fins and on caudal fin, never on anal fin. Scales present on soft dorsal, anal and caudal fins. 5-7 scale rows along the space between dorsal fins; 12 scale rows along upper part of caudal peduncle.
