Tetrapturus Rafinesque, 1810
Body moderately slender, compressed, with moderate or long bill, nape often rising gently but sometimes steeply to first dorsal fin. Anterior lobe of first dorsal fin rounded or pointed, its height about equal to body depth or a little greater. Pelvic fins fairly long, membrane not well-developed.
Large epipelagic fishes (to about 3 m), fast-swimming, perhaps using the stout bill to spear or stun fishes, although unscathed fished can be found in the stomach of marlins (Mather, Clark and Mason, 1975).
