6 pores on chin but no median groove behind. Eye large, preorbital narrow. Preopercle straight, serrated. Mouth fairly large, oblique, the lower jaw projecting; maxilla reaching to below front of pupil. Teeth in jaws, strong, conical, slightly curved, in several rows, outer series enlarged. Scales small, rough, extending over bases and rays of soft unpaired fins. Vertebrae 27.
