Genus Brachydeuterus

Brachydeuterus Gill, 1862

Two pores on chin, but no median groove behind. Eye large. Preopercle straight, feebly serrated on corner's edge. Mouth large and oblique, maxilla reaching to below front of pupil. Teeth in jaws curved and pointed, in several rows, in upper jaw outer series enlarged. Scales fairly large, less than 50 in lateral line. Vertebrae 26.

Habitat: sandy and muddy bottoms, in depths of 10-100 m, moving near the surface at night. Food: invertebrates and small fishes. Reproduction: no data.

Distribution: eastern Atlantic, coast of Morocco. Elsewhere, southward to Angola.
