Sub-orbital papillae with 7 transverse rows, 4 before, and 2 lower parts below, longitudinal row b. No row a. Anterior and posterior oculoscapular and preopercular head canals present. Predorsal area and nape scaled, cheek naked. Anterior nostril tubular, without process from rim. Pectoral fin uppermost rays free from membrane only at tips. Pelvic disc complete, anterior membrane without conspicuous lateral lobes. First dorsal rays VI. Scales in lateral series 53-68, ctenoid. Vertebral mode 28.
Large Mediterranean species, typically in brackish water, exploited by local fisheries in the northern Adriatic and Black Sea.
