Pseudaphya Iljin, 1930

Sub-orbital papillae with row a around lower edge of orbit; 2 major transverse rows before, 1 above, and 1 below, longitudinal row b, which ends anteriorly below rear edge of pupil. Anterior oculoscapular and preopercular head canals present, former ending anteriorly between eyes, at pore l (paired), and lacking pore b, and latter without pore d. Lower jaw teeth in a single row. Branchiostegal membrane attached to not more than anterior end of isthmus side. Scales on body ctenoid, predorsal area scaled to opposite rear edge of opercle; head otherwise naked, breast with cycloid scales. Anterior nostril, a short tube, lacking process from rim. Pectoral fin uppermost rays not free from membrane. Pelvic disc complete. First dorsal rays V. Scales in lateral series 25-30. Vertebrae 30.
One small Mediterranean species, nektonic inshore, with progenetic features. Local fishery in Balearic Is.
