Genus Proterorhinus

Proterorhinus Smitt, 1899

Sub-orbital papillae with 7 transverse rows, 4 before, and 2 lower parts below, longitudinal row b. No row a. Anterior and posterior oculoscapular, and preopercular, head canals present. Predorsal area and nape scaled, cheek naked; scales ctenoid on posterior nape. Anterior nostril very elongate, beyond lips, but without process from rim. Pectoral fin uppermost rays within membrane. Pelvic disc complete, anterior membrane without conspicuous lateral lobes. First dorsal rays VI, vertebral mode 32.
Monotypic Ponto-Caspian genus, close to Neogobius but distinguished by long anterior nostrils.
