Predorsal area and nape scaled laterally. Low median ridge before origin of first dorsal fin. Anterior nostril a short tube, without process from rim. Teeth in upper jaw in a single row. Pectoral fin uppermost rays not free from membrane. Pelvic disc complete, anterior membrane without pronounced lateral lobes. Caudal fin lanceolate. First dorsal rays VI. Scales ctenoid, 30-90 in lateral series. Vertebrae 26.

Species: several Indo-Pacific species; in Clofnam area 1 (lessepsian immigrant to the eastern Mediterranean).
