Sub-orbital papillae with row a around rear lower edge of orbit; rows a and c without transverse proliferation but cp is a short transverse row. Anterior and posterior oculoscapular and preopercular head canals present, the first lacking pore * but extending onto snout. Predorsal area and head naked. Antenor nostril a short tube, without process from rim. Pectoral fin uppermost rays within membrane. Pelvic disc complete. First dorsal rays VII. Vertebral mode 32. Scales ctenoid, 35-40 in lateral series. Small midwater species of the temperate eastern Atlantic.
