Small fishes; body usually covered with cycloid scales; dorsal fin long, more spiny than soft rays; pelvics jugular; gill membranes united to form a fold across throat. Worldwide, generally living in intertidal zone or on coral reefs. Mostly feeding on benthic invertebrates; larger species predatory on other fish. Many ovoviviparous species; the male guards the eggs in oviparous species.
